Exploring UAE WORK CULTURE IN the LIGHT OF SEVEN DIMENSIONS OF CULTURE

Exploring different culture has always been inherent to my basic nature and the study of Fons Trompenaars and Charles Hampden Turner Seven Dimensions of Culture invigorated the pent-up craving for doing something constructive and transforming my inquisitiveness to meaningful contribution to my profession.

The Seven Dimensions of Culture model was created by Fons Trompenaars and Charles Hampden-Turner, and was published in their 1998 book – “Riding the Waves of Culture: Understanding Diversity in Global Business”. In the book, the authors argue that there are major cultural differences between nations and that they affect the process of doing business and managing organization.

The diminishing effectiveness of management processes that are derived from the company’s own cultural context on the foreign subsidiaries is the major challenge a multinational company faces as they ignore the cultural difference they have with the region.
It is of paramount importance that we detect and understand the cultural differences and consequently remember the fact that, due to them these differences, there is no “one best way of managing” organizations”

The thought of translating my inquisitiveness into a structured document led me to analyze my cultural understanding of UAE, my home for the last 7 years. UAE, as a country is characterized by a strong expat population which brings lot of different cultures; hence becomes a melting pot of ideas, thoughts, ethos and race.

Having said that, UAE has some uniqueness to its culture which I am trying to analyze from these seven dimensions of Fons Trompenars. Following are my subjective views and are completely open to critical analysis.
